Unleash Your Purpose with the Power of a "Why" Statement
Updated: Jun 27, 2023
Dear Beautiful Beings,
In life's journey, it's easy for us to lose sight of our true purpose amid the chaos and myriad of distractions. If you're anything like me, you often find yourself caught up in routines and obligations, often neglecting some of the deeper more meaningful inquiries with self: Why do we do what we do? What is our ultimate mission? Who am I becoming? This is where I believe a "why" statement comes into play. A "why" statement is a powerful tool inspired by the wisdom of Simon Sinek - who famously emphasized the importance of starting with why. While Simon's initial introduction and primary focus was targeted towards corporations, I found a personal application was just as powerful.
In my quest to define my "why" statement I have learned the process of definition can have a profound impact on shifting the trajectory in our life's journey. The "why" statement provides a guiding light, which helps us stay focused, motivated and fulfilled. It's like a compass, pointing you towards the path that aligns with your deepest values and desires. It encapsulates the essence of both your personal and professional aspirations. To illustrate this allow me to share my current "why" statement which is: "To help everyone with whom I am fortunate enough to establish meaningful and impactful connections, no matter where they are in life, be influenced to and courageous enough to live their most purposeful and fulfilling life." This statement gives me a true sense of power and purpose.
I'd like to delve a little deeper into some more of the reasons why creating a "why" statement is so significant while also sharing some affirmations to support the efficacy each justification offers. Affirmations help us tap into our intentions, offer us motivation and challenge us to push ourselves to reach a greater sense of purpose and possibility:
1. A Clear Sense of Direction: Our "why" statement acts as a compass, guiding us through life's choices and challenges. It helps us discern what truly matters, enabling us to align our actions and decisions with our core values and aspirations. By knowing our purpose, we can make conscious choices that steer us toward our long-term goals, bypassing distractions that hinder our progress. Affirmation: "I trust my inner compass to align me with my true direction and lead me towards my desired destination."
2. Motivation That Ignites Passion: Our "why" statement fuels our passion and motivation. It serves as a constant reminder of what truly drives us, even in the face of adversity. When we are connected to our purpose, we discover a wellspring of energy and determination to overcome obstacles and persevere in the pursuit of our dreams. Affirmation: "I am fueled by a deep sense of purpose and passion from which I am empowered to make meaningful impact in the world."
3. Meaningful Connections: Our "why" statement fosters authentic and meaningful connections with others who share our values. When we are driven by a purpose that resonates with others, it creates a strong bond, inspiring collaboration and support. It's through these connections that we find the synergy to grow, learn, and make a greater impact on the world around us. Affirmation: "I open my heart to meaningful connections, fostering authentic relationships that enrich my life and the lives of others."
4. Living a Purposeful and Fulfilling Life: Embracing our "why" statement leads to a life filled with purpose and fulfillment. It infuses every action we take with meaning, allowing us to contribute to the well-being of others and leave a lasting legacy. By living our purpose, we find a deep sense of satisfaction and contentment that transcends material success. Affirmation: "I embrace my purpose, living each day with intention to create a life filled with gratitude and meaning."
While I strongly support and encourage each of us to take some time to craft a "why" statement I want to remind you it shouldn't simply be words that describe an overarching theme of disconnected purpose but instead serve as your guiding force, be linked to your intrinsic values and truly makes you feel good and focused. It should be used as a tool that empowers you to live a purpose-driven life while inspiring others to do the same. So, if you haven't created a "why" statement, there is no better time than the present to take inventory and own your purpose. And remember to reflect often because your purpose can change as your life evolves; please know, that's absolutely OK and expected.
So remember, your purpose like mine, is unique, and only you can bring it to life. Embrace your "why" statement, unleash your greatest potential, and embark on a journey that is consciously purposeful, fulfilling, and inspiring to yourself and others. We all deserve to live in our powerful purpose!
